Electrical Contractor Licensing in Colorado

Electrical Contractors in the State of Colorado are required to hold a license or registration from the Department of Regulatory Agencies.  Licenses are issued by the Department’s Electrical Board.  Licensing and registration is part of Colorado’s Mandatory Practice Act, which states that no person or business entity may perform electrical work within the state without a license.

As part of the licensing process, contractors are required to prove a number of years of work experience and pass a qualifying examination.  Contractors who register with the Board must choose a responsible party to oversee all work performed by their business entity.

Reciprocal General Contractor Licensing in Colorado

The State of Colorado does not hold formal reciprocal licensing agreements for General Contractors in other states.  This is because licensing in Colorado is handled at the local-level rather than the state-level.  Licensing requirements are determined by the county, city or municipality in which the contractor chooses to work.

Out-of-state contractors who want to work on construction projects in Colorado must contact their local codes official or building department to determine what is required.
