Electrical Contractor Licensing in Ohio

Commercial Electrical Contractors in the State of Ohio are required to hold a license from the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (OCILB).  A license from the state is needed to perform commercial electrical work of any kind in Ohio.  As part of the licensing process, contractors must meet all the OCILB’s requirements and pass a 2-part exam.

*Please note that all Residential Electrical Contractors are licensed at the local-level in Ohio.  All contractors must contact their local jurisdiction to determine what is required to perform work as a Residential Electrical Contractor.

Reciprocal General Contractor Licensing in Ohio

The State of Ohio does not hold reciprocal agreements with other states for General, Residential and most Commercial Contractors.  This is because contractors are licensed at the local-level in Ohio.

If a contractor from another state wants to conduct business in the State of Ohio, they must comply with the local laws and ordinances in the city or town in which they choose to work.

 

Ohio does, however, hold reciprocal agreements for Commercial Contractors engaged in the electrical trade.  In this case, the State of Ohio works with: (more…)
